Complete Works for Orchestra, vol. 2
As in the first volume of the Complete Works for Orchestra of Bruno Maderna (1920-1973), published in the Fundación BBVA-NEOS Collection, we are guided in our journey through the orchestral music of the Italian composer by one of the most eminent conductors on today’s contemporary music scene.
Born in Madrid, Alfred Tamayo would later settle in the Austrian capital where he immersed himself in the musical output of the Second Viennese School. He has since gained a merited reputation as one of the most able conductors of contemporary music. A student of Pierre Boulez and Witold Rowicki in conducting, and Klaus Huber in composition, he has been sought out by many rising composers to lead the premiere performances of their works. In this second volume, again at the helm of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tamayo reveals how Maderna put his own stamp on post-serialism starting in the early 1950s.
Organizing his material according to strict rules of logic and mathematics, the composer’s mission, which he shared with compatriots like Luciano Berio, was to revitalize the music of his native Italy. This new language can be heard equally in purely orchestral pieces like ‘Composizione in tre tempi‘, and in his masterly treatment of the works structured round a solo performance, with examples for voice, violin and horn, though he perhaps shows a special predilection for the woodwind family.
